Periodontal Treatment Process
The treatment for periodontitis typically involves the following steps:
A professional cleaning method that removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria buildup above and below the gumline—key factors in periodontal disease. This essential step in treatment helps protect oral health and prevent tooth loss.
Smooths the root surface to prevent further plaque accumulation and bacterial growth. This process aids gum healing and tissue regeneration, reducing the progression of periodontitis.
Antibiotics may be used in various forms: Oral medication (e.g., Amoxicillin, Metronidazole), Topical application directly into periodontal pockets, Antibacterial mouthwash for added protection.
A small incision is made to lift the gum tissue, allowing deep cleaning of the tooth roots. The gums are then repositioned for better attachment. If bone loss is present, the dentist may reshape or regenerate the bone structure.
If gum tissue has receded, a graft from the palate or a donor source is placed over the affected area. This helps cover exposed roots, reduce further recession, and improve aesthetics.
Recommended when severe bone loss compromises tooth stability. Bone material (from the patient, synthetic sources, or a donor) is used to support regeneration and strengthen the jawbone.
A special membrane is placed to encourage the growth of new bone and gum tissue while preventing unwanted cell interference, ensuring proper healing.
